The architectural language used to forge the Jodhpur Stone House structure not only adopts a rural pedagogy by using the local Jodhpur stone but also escalates into a distinctive form. The house sits in the hot and dry climate of Jodhpur, set in the stark landscape of the Thar Desert, popularly known as Blue city which is in vicinity to the ‘Umaid Bhawan Palace’ thus the project gets view and beauty of it from inside through the window pane. Proposed as a stay allocation for users influenced the conceptual flow of the design as a house that was spatially free in circulation.
The multiplicity of the functional space used by simple demarcations, like double heighted terrace garden and porch for grand welcoming entrance covered with a cantilevered balcony over it in the front elevation. Translating this experience into a spatial expression, we derived an open-space concept to define the internal layout with the help of introducing a Backyard area which act as an open space which also brings out an underlying vernacular essence, of implementing the prevalence of natural light and ventilation in house. Also the importance of the backyard private garden is for the reason of surviving the current climate change and which is in adjacent to the pool, living, dining & kitchen.
The elevations are designed with L-shaped long windows in the front facade mixing it with locally available Jodhpur’s stone in tan brown color and segregating level differences in elevation by playing with the length at different levels. This idea is achieved by creating patterns with the local stone in the façade.
